Mission Statement

Austin is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school that has grown out of the Augustinian tradition; as such we continue to strive to the ideal of “One mind, one heart intent on serving God.“ We find in the Great Commandment, “Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul and your whole mind; and love your neighbor as much as you love yourself“ (Matthew 22:34-40), the basis for evaluating all that we attempt to do. Our statement of goals and purposes, our daily interaction with students, parents and alumni, and the school's long-term impact on society must bear witness to our Catholic heritage and tradition.

Philosophy/Belief Statement

We believe that the sincere effort to examine our daily work and our relationship to one another and the larger society in the light of the Great Commandment will help to create a community of intellectually informed, morally grounded and dedicated teachers and students and a force for the improvement of society. We propose the adoption of a new school slogan, “God, self, neighbor“, as a means of helping us to evaluate everything from daily life to long term planning.

School History

Austin Preparatory School was founded by the Augustinian Fathers of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova in 1961 and opened to students in September 1963. Austin is, in fact, an abbreviated version of Augustine, so our name does carry on the legacy and acknowledges our debt to St. Augustine and his followers, the Augustinians. Saint Augustine is the School's patron saint, and we strive toward the Augustinian ideal of: “One mind, one heart, intent on God.”

Since 1973 Austin , as an incorporated Catholic Independent Day School , has been self governed and directed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. Augustinian priests continued to serve Austin in a number of capacities until 1992 when the remaining priests were re-assigned by the Province. Currently our faculty of 65 men and women includes two priests, and one religious.

Austin opened the Junior School Program in September of 1987 in order to extend its services to a wider population. The School further expanded in 1992 by offering admission to young women for the first time in the school's history. Today, Austin enrolls just over 700 students in almost an equal split between young men and young women. Of this number we enroll 200 students in the Junior School and 500 in the High School. Our student body is geographically diverse, coming to us from over 55 cities and towns in Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
