Name: Canandaigua Montessori School |
|||
Canandaigua Montessori School is committed to bringing young people together from a broad spectrum of ethnic, national, and religious backgrounds. We welcome diversity, and teach our children to broaden their perspective of the world through friendships, mutual respect, and understanding. Canandaigua Montessori School offers a toddler program and a three-year preschool program. A child would enter preschool at 2-3 years of age, and remain for the full 3 years, after which the child would move into a first grade program in their residential school district. Each new application is carefully considered according to the student's individual talents and learning style and our goal is to help families find the best match between student and school. After reading through our literature we encourage parents to join us for a tour of our school (please contact our office for an appointment). Once you have toured the school, we invite you and your child back for a second visit. It is during this second visit that you will meet with the teachers and see your child participate in the classroom.
We thoroughly review each application in the order of its submission. All applications are given prompt attention, with openings being filled as space becomes available. To apply, complete and return an application with your $50.00 non-refundable application fee to our admissions office as soon as possible. |
Our mission is to provide a rich and supportive community for children's growth and development as people and students. Through the educational methods developed by Maria Montessori, the Canandaigua Montessori School seeks to encourage the acquisition of skills and attitudes that will form the basis of love and desire for life-long learning and discovery. In addition, we hope to guide children to become independent, self-fulfilled and responsible individuals and members of their communities.

In 1973, a group of parents in the Canandaigua community began searching for an alternative educational program—one that would meet their goals of child-centered learning, while maintaining high academic standards. The group chose the Montessori method, and in September of 1973, an extension of the Perinton Montessori School opened with a Directress brought here from Ceylon , Miss Swerine DeMel. The school was located in the basement of the First Congregational Church of Canandaigua with 12 preschool children. Under the leadership of Barbara R. Hamlin and Sharon W. Hicks, the school was purchased by the parents in January 1974, and renamed The Canandaigua Montessori School. In July of 1974, Miss Judith L. Bailey became the Head Directress and Academic Administrator of the school. She conducted a six-week summer session, and carried full academic responsibility for a class of 25 children. Sharon W. Hicks served as Administrator of the school and functioned as an aid to the classroom teacher. |
