With books in orange crates and apple boxes, The Library opened in 1949 for 4 hours one day each week and was staffed by volunteers of the American Association of University Women. Then in 1950, the County moved the Library into a small building but because of funding problems, it did not actually open to the public until 1953. Even then, there was no electricity due to funding problems. However by 1956, 30,000 books were being circulated annually. The Library moved to a larger building in 1974. In 1991, the Library was moved in 1991 to the present location of 701 N. Main. The Library is a 47,000 sq. ft. building. This includes 2 meeting rooms used by the public, 3 study rooms, a Geneaology Room, a Southwest room, a booksale room, several offices as well as a large Library area decorated throughout in southwest colors and designs.
