School Violence and Race

This session will examine the influence of race on school violence and disorder. The social reconstruction within schools and the lasting effects on racial integration will be discussed. The relationship between delinquency, victimization, and the racial composition of the faculty and student bodies will be examined, as will the difference between the absolute racial make-up and the racial heterogeneity of the school community and the complex relationship between the racial and socio-economic demographics of a school. Research-based prevention programs and strategies that have been shown effective in diverse school settings will also be presented.
