Lesson Plan:

5th Grade Modified ELA

Non-fiction Unit

 

 

Objectives:

·        Skill: SWBAT identify features of a newspaper article

·        Knowledge: Students will know that newspaper articles give information on non-fiction topics and current events.

·        Understanding: Students will understand that information in newspapers are based on facts and opinions of current events.

 

Standards:

·        Standard 1:   Language for Information and Understanding

·        Standard 3: Language for Critical Analysis and Evaluation

·        Standard 4:   Language for Social Interaction

 

Anticipatory Set

  • Give each pair or tri-ad a cut up newspaper article (amount of pieces vary with level of students)
  • Have students piece this “mystery” together to see what we will be studying next
  • Tell that we are going to be studying newspaper articles

 

Teaching Input

  • Tell that we are going to be looking at the different features of newspapers and what the purpose of newspapers are
  • Show examples of different kinds of newspapers
  • Hand out articles and have students share what features they notice (magazines, billboards, headlines, pictures…)

 

Teaching: Modeling

  • Choose a short article to show on the SMART board and read to class
  • Students should also have copy in front of them
  • Analyze article highlighting important words or phrases
  • Complete graphic organizer for summary (attached)
  • Write summary as class

 

Teaching: Checking for Understanding

  • Have students write in one sentence what the article is about
  • Tell them to write 2 questions that can be answered from the article
  • Ask if there is anything else they are still wondering

 

 

 

 

Guided Practice:

  • Put a bunch of articles out and have the students each choose an article that they ant to read (option: work in pairs)
  • Have students repeat activity with their article
  • Complete graphic organizer

 

Closure:

  • Students share articles and tell in own words what it is about nd what they have learned
  • Students ask the group 1-2 questions that can be answered from their summary

 

 

Independent Practice:

·        Have students either choose an article to complete for homework, or find one they are interested in on their own

·        Repeat lesson with articles from magazine

 

Materials:


·        Pencils

·        Paper

·        Newspapers

·        SMART Board

·        Graphic organizer sheet

 

·         Highlighters



Duration: 45 minutes

 

**Technology piece**

During the 45 minute writing block, students will go to the computer lab and write a newspaper article about either an event in their life that occurred or they have the option to research something that they would like to write an article about (ex: why is sugar not good to consume).  They will use the newspaper template and online tool from http://interactives.mped.org/view_interactive.aspx?id=110&title=

They will be able to edit and be creative.  They will print article to share and post!
