County History:

Bennett County is in southwestern South Dakota and was once part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation dsignated in 1889. On June 3, 1909 the South Dakota Legislature created and named Bennett County in honor of two federal judges both with the last name of Bennett. Bennett County was established in 1911 as a county by the state legislature and Martin was named the county seat.
