County History:

Williams County was named for the Honorable Erastus Appleman Williams (E.A. Williams), who was a leader in the territorial and State Legislatures. Established in 1891 by the state legislature, boundaries were established and Williston was chosen as the county seat. In 1910, state legislators divided the county horizontally to create a new county "Divide" to the north.
