In the spirit of collaboration and cooperation, the Bon Appetit Management Company at Whittier College saves their peelings to go into the compost and we also raise worms. In addition, the gardens teach the children about charity, for the food that is harvested goes to a local soup kitchen serving local families who are among our community's hungry at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mission Statement:

Broadoaks is an academic program at Whittier College, providing a model of excellence in the care and education of children in preschool through middle school, and creating a dynamic center for the study of children, their education, their social worlds, and their overall well-being.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Broadoaks is a private, non-profit demonstration school serving approximately 300 children and their families each year. The school emphasizes developmentally based early childhood and elementary education as the foundation for later school success, social responsibility, and lifelong learning.

Program History:

Broadoaks has served children and their families and has been a center for the education of teachers, social workers, psychologists, and health care providers for more than 100 years. Originally located in Pasadena, the school was founded in 1906 by Ada Mae Brooks and Imelda E. Brooks as a home for abandoned children. The school soon achieved national recognition as a training center for the professional development of early childhood educators.

Volunteer Participation: Broadoaks relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors to maintain its services because a priority of the school is to maintain a representative socio-economic, ethnic, and ability balance in all its classrooms. This balance is crucial to the school's work in teacher education, since a student population that approximates that of the public schools provides the most meaningful "learning laboratory" for both current and future teachers.
Program Information:

Broadoaks serves nearly 350 families with children in preschool through 8th grade during the regular school year and preschool through 8th grade in the summer during its Science Academy, Musical Theatre Academy and the Woodworking and Design Academy. Broadoaks is also an academic program of Whittier College, serving as a “learning laboratory” for students in child development, education, psychology, social work, child advocacy, pre-medicine, pre-law, and other professional fields serving children and families.
