Communities In Schools – Who We Are
l Largest and most effective DROPOUT PREVENTION organization in the country. Provide services and connect resources to at-risk youth in public schools.
l Our Purpose- To ensure all students have the five basic resources:
l A personal one on one relationship with a caring adult
l A safe place to learn and grow
l A marketable skill to use upon graduation
l A chance to give back to peers and community
l A healthy start and a healthy future
CIS-National
l Over 195 CIS organizations in 28 states
l Nearly 1 million youth served directly by CIS each year
CIS of Forsyth County
l Initiated 2001 - with 1 Community site and 65 students. Today CISFC serves 800 students annually in 5 schools and 5 community sites.
Dropout Statistics – “Every 9 Seconds”
l Forsyth – 898 students dropped out last year (07/08) with 1,062 students the previous year
l North Carolina – 22,434 dropouts out of approx 450,000
l U.S. – Average graduation rate is 73%
l In N.C. - 60% graduation rate
For every 100 9th graders, only 60 will graduate 4 years later.
“Every 9 seconds in America a student drops out.”
Every school day 7000 students become drop outs.

l 99% of CIS students stayed in school
l 98% promoted to the next grade
l 100% of CIS seniors graduated
l 12 CIS graduates currently enrolled in colleges/universities, 7 scholarships with help of CIS. Majority are 1st generation college students.
