Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to restoring and maintaining the forest and its trails for sustainable recreation, to educating ourselves and others about the forest, and to promoting a healthy habitat for native plants and wildlife. We encourage all visitors to enjoy the forest in a manner consistent with protecting this rare and endangered pine barrens ecosystem.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Public forests and parks set aside for both conservation and recreation do best when citizen volunteers work with state agencies to keep the forests and the wildlife they support healthy and beautiful. This generation owes future generations the opportunity to be able to enjoy large tracts of nature in an unspoiled and wild-feeling environment. Recreation is a wonderful thing to enjoy in nature, but recreational activities should be detrimental to the natural environment.

Program History:

Friends of MSSF began in 2007 with a small group of people who love the MSSF and wanted to help protect it while improving the many recreational activities the forest supports. Today the Friends of MSSF offer regular guided hikes, work parties and community events. We have established the Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Community Initiative to help the MSSF by engaging people who live in Carver, Plymouth, Wareham and Kingston in supporting the pine barrens ecology by planting native plants in their yards and gardens.

Events:

Variable and ongoing.
