Mission Statement:

Clean Bread and Cheese Creek’s vision is to bring awareness to the local environment and educate individuals how it exists within and affects the overall quality of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay. Our efforts also create a healthier, more sanitary and attractive stream. Our goals are to expand our volunteer base for future projects which includes attracting youth in the community, families, as well as the elderly who can participate in less strenuous activities, to educate residents and local merchants of our efforts and to advocate for a long term commitment in caring for their public space and the creek which resides in it. We will continue to hold neighborhood activities which bring the community together in an effort to keep our neighborhood clean.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

"Everyone can help, and everyone should try" - John F. Kennedy

Program History:

I am the founder and president of Clean Bread and Cheese Creek. We are an all-volunteer organization funded solely through private donations working with the community as well as other environmental and civic organizations, to clean up the Dundalk Community and our environment. We work in association with many regional, national and international organizations such as The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, the Ocean Conservancy, American Rivers, Reclaim the Bay, the National Environmental Education Foundation, Day to Serve, Trash Free Maryland and more.
Since 2009, our organization has grown from a small group of friends to include hundreds of volunteers with no funding from outside groups. While our restoration activities originally focused on the 4.71-mile-long Bread and Cheese Creek, we have expanded to include surrounding areas. We also assist other environmentally-conscious volunteer organizations with their projects. Another goal of our organization is education; we speak at schools, colleges, and businesses about environmental sustainability and stewardship, as well as to inform the community about legislative matters.
Clean Bread and Cheese Creek organizes a several cleanup a year from March through November focusing on various streams, parks and public lands. In six years, 4,330 volunteers have removed 528 shopping carts, 583 tires, 115 bicycles, and over 197 tons of trash, while at the same time recycling over half of the materials collected from our community’s streams, parks and public lands.
We have also grown beyond only cleaning our namesake stream of Bread and Cheese Creek to include regularly scheduled cleanups at the Peninsula Expressway, Bear Creek, Lynch Cove Run, Merritt Park, Stansbury Park, Bread and Butter Creek, the Methodist Meeting House Monument, Battle Acre Monument Park, North Point Battlefield State Park, and more.
We have several cleanups already scheduled this spring with cleanups in the summer and fall of 2017 currently being planned. Service Learning and Community Service Hours are available as well. Please join us as we work toward a cleaner, greener, healthier community and environment!
