History

The library had humble beginnings dating back to the mid-1800s. After years of constant moving and instability the city received a donation of 20000 from the Carnegie Foundation to construct the original library building in 1916. In 1926 the lower level of the original library building was transformed into the ChildrenLibrary. Additions were made to the library building in 1937 1953 and 1962. The library later built another structure next to its original building. The building opened for service in 1976 hailed as a modern but simple facility and the original library building was used for offices the bookmobile material storage and meeting rooms. In 1986 the library restored its original Carnegie building and built a skywalk between the two buildings. New Castle-Henry County Public Library recently finished major expansion project. After years of explosive growth the library was outgrowing its current facility. The library will remain in the same location where it has existed since 1916. The original Carnegie library remained intact and provided the inspiration for the design of the new library.
