Name: Russell Bede School
|
||||
To teach and remediate students who are having difficulty succeeding in the regular education classroom so that when they return to regular mainstream classrooms they will have the capabilities required to be successful. |
Students with learning differences need to feel safe and comfortable, and experience success in their ability to learn. This will build confidence and excitement about the learning process and will develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime. |
||||
Russell Bede School was founded by Helen Myers, whose father and son both had learning challenges. She obtained a Masters Degree in Special Education to understand how to cope with these challenges and began tutoring her son and other children with similar needs. This tutoring was very successful so she founded the school to meet a larger group of students. |
Students of average to above average ability who are struggling with school and do not have a history of behavior problems. |

There are at least 3 major reasons why Russell Bede School is able to address the needs of its' students. First, the building itself. Purchased in 1982 by Helen and Al Myers, it doesn't look like a school. It looks and feels like a home. When our kids enter the two-story Victorian building, they feel comfortable immediately. The rooms are small and intimate and the carpeted floors absorb sound to minimize distractions. Second, each class has only six students, so teachers know when a student needs extra help
and they're able to provide it immediately. Our teachers supplement the state curriculum with special programs and activities to meet needs. This individual attention is key.

Third, we're blessed with a wonderful staff. Our classroom teachers are all experienced at helping students with learning differences. And we have a group of specialty staff who provide drama, PE, music, art, occupational and speech therapy, social group therapy, and yoga. So student needs are met, they gain confidence and academic skills at or above grade level while benefiting from a comprehensive educational program in a nurturing environment. |
