West African Hand Drumming Camp
Ryan Edwards
Session 1: June 18 - 22 w/Ryan Edwards, who studies in Africa w/native drummers for several months each year. "What it is." A camp for playing cool, funky music from Africa, meeting new friends, doing great art and putting on a show. We will have fun studying traditional West African music, playing djembes and dununs (hand and stick drums from Guinea). Students will also explore art projects inspired by African cultures. All abilities are welcome to this camp, which culminates in a student performance.
Leadership & Teambuilding Camp

Session 2: June 25 - 29 w/Scott Schneiderhan, Behavioral Specialist & consultant Campers will learn the concepts of leadership as well as how to be part of a successful team. Problem solving, creative thinking and negotiation skills will be learned by all. Campers will play games geared to learning how to work together toward a common goal as well as understanding team dynamics.
Young Authors Workshop ($175.00/wk)

Session 3: June 25 - 29 w/Pat Pettit, Creative Memory Consultant and Steppingstone Admissions Director Full of imagination? Is storytelling fun and exciting for you? Lots of characters in your head that need "storybook homes?" If so, this is the camp for you!!! Kids 6 and up use an author's process (brainstorming, character and plot development, editing, etc.) to create a work of fiction - - - both story and pictures (illustrations and/or photos). The book they create will be published (as a hard-covered, stitched book) and released to them by the end of July. This camp is a wonderful opportunity for creative minds that want to learn how to build great stories, and they'll have their own book published as a long lasting tribute to their efforts!!

Session 4: July 9 - 13 w/Arlyn Bisogno, a native Spanish speaker trained in immersion techniques of teaching This is a Spanish language class but so much more! During each session, your child will make crafts, play games, write, interact with other children using words learned in Spanish and much more that will encourage him or her to have fun discovering and learning another language.

Session 5: July 16 - 21 w/Chris Long, former editor and veteran summer camp instructor Campers will learn the basics of digital photography during a travel-thumbed week that begins with the students taking each other's "passport" photos. Just in time for those summer vacation trips, we will practice some tricks for holding the camera still, focusing, and use of flash. Games will emphasize the elements of composition such as use of color, framing, perspective and the rule of thirds. In addition to photographs, kids will take home a portfolio containing photo-related crafts including a frame, scrapbook and puzzle. There will be hands-on camera time everyday so it is suggested that campers bring a digital camera to class. One time use cameras are highly recommended.

Session 6: July 23 - 27 w/Grandpa Don, retired engineer, inventor and instructor for Science Is Super, a Steppingstone After School Class What is the difference between an arachnid and an insect? At this camp, we will explore all kinds of bugs and learn the differences among them. We will build homes for them after we study the environment where they usually live. Come build traps, start your own bug collection and learn some of their names. We will travel to see an actual bug collection, see how bees live, work and make honey, and get acquainted with a mammal, the bat, that eats lots of bugs. Come join us as we explore a world that is full of interesting, creepy and crawly stuff.

Session 7: July 30 - Aug 3 w/Jeremy Wojchihosky, Loyola Univ. student & Steppingstone alum This camp offers children a unique learning experience. Using the microwave and toaster oven, kids will learn basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, and how to follow recipe directions. They will also learn how to help Mom and Dad in the kitchen, and might even teach them a few things.

Session 8: July 30 - Aug. 3 w/Scott Schneiderhan, veteran camper, mountain climber & adventurer Has your child always wanted a chance to go on a camping trip? Campers will learn the skills required to live in the great outdoors. How to pitch a tent, build a campfire, roast marshmallows and survive in the wild. This week will end with an optional overnight campout. Parents are welcome to join us.

Session 9: August 6 - 10 w/Grandpa Don, retired engineer, inventor and instructor for Science Is Super, a Steppingstone After School Class When you scuff your feet across the carpet and touch something, what happens? Where did that spark come from? Did Benjamin Franklin have anything to do with explaining this phenomenon? Come join us as we explore the invisible world of electricity. During this week we will visit the Fermi Power Plant to see how Nuclear power is used to generate electricity. We will also explore the use of renewable energy such as wind and solar power. I would not be surprised if you will be building your own wind and solar systems.

Session 10: Aug. 13 - 17 w/Dr. Morse, Prof. Emeritus of Biophysics from Illinois State University, president of Scientific Software Services and Steppingstone's Computer Programming instructor Ever said "Don't touch that" to your kids? Well, here is the answer for your inquisitive children. At our computer camp, they not only get to touch the computers, but they get to take them (safely) apart! See how a disk drive spins up. See how a floppy drive works. Learn how to take memory out and add it back. Not only do we work with computer hardware, but we will show your kids such programs as (depending on developmental level) several versions of LOGO, SQUEAK, Alice, a ToonTalk demo, and Python, all of which they will take home. Session 11: Aug. 20 - 24 w/Stephanie Sarris, Instructor of Art at Steppingstone as well as a variety of local colleges Students will investigate and experiment with the various clay media that is available today. Colored modeling clay, traditional clay bodies/glazes and model magic. The ceramic clay projects will include the various hand-built structures, such as coil, slab and pinch pots. The projects for all clay media will include dragons, animals, food sculptures, pots, cup/saucer and a tea pot. All projects will be related to artists/art movements in the history of art.

Whether you're an absolute beginner or a more advanced player, Day Jams offers you the opportunity to learn guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals. Day Jams Rock Camp lets young musicians ages 9-15 play in their own band, write their own songs, record an album, perform live in concert and more. You'll work with professional musicians and teachers in a friendly and creative environment. New Music Programs Offered This Year For more info, ask for the Steppingstone Music Camp Brochure The following 2 programs are being offered in parallel with the option for young violinists to participate in the Suzuki violin program for 1, 2 or the full 3 weeks that are also scheduled for the Summer Music Academy.
All students are welcome to enroll in either a beginning Suzuki violin program (1, 2 or 3 weeks) or an advanced Traditional program (3-week session). Our instructors are experienced professionals with Suzuki Training, doctorate degrees and performance careers in the United States and abroad. For those interested in an immersion experience without leaving home, this is the perfect opportunity!
Young elementary students are encouraged to join the SUZUKI SUMMER VIOLIN CAMP while upper elementary and secondary students of strings, woodwinds, or piano, should consider the traditional SUMMER MUSIC ACADEMY. Any student will be considered for either program with his/her current teacher's recommendation.
The exciting 3-week long SUMMER MUSIC ACADEMY focuses on all facets of classical music performance: individual instruction, master classes, large and small ensemble technique, integration with theory and history, and live performance.
