School age child care programs are designed to be a link between school and home for elementary school students. Qualified, experienced child care providers will supervise and interact with children to ensure their safety and enjoyment of the program setting.
The focus is on the child in this program. Everyone's feelings will be respected and a positive experience will consistently be the goal. Flexible programming allows each child a choice of interesting and age-appropriate activities.
As an informal extension of the school day, learning will take place in a safe, fun and relaxed way. A stimulating yet comfortable and nurturing environment will be provided in which children can choose planned, quality activities depending upon their interests and needs. Children's opinions and suggestions are a valuable part of curriculum planning.

Race Against Racism
Race, gender, language, appearance, ability - factors that make each of us wonderfully unique, can also divide us by engendering hate and misunderstanding. As diversity in our classrooms and society increases, the need for understanding and acceptance of differences and commonalities becomes vital. It is crucial for our children to learn to face and resolve problems, to grow in understanding and respect for others and themselves and to advocate in their own ways for fairness, equity and inclusion. Dealing with these very complex issues is not easy and takes time and patience. Children enrolled in the program learn about these issues by participating in Race Against Racism, a YWCA Hallmark Program.
Race Against Racism's hands-on curriculum provides children with the tools and resources needed to explore the complexities of racism. It creates a positive, supportive environment that acknowledges their feelings and helps children develop new ways of seeing and acting.
Race Against Racism is designed to integrate the concepts of diversity, acceptance, prejudice, race and racism with activities involving math, science, language arts, music, art, history and physical activity. Parents are asked to become partners with the YWCA to reinforce the Race Against Racism theme.
By encouraging at-home participation, children are more likely to share curriculum messages with others and carry it into their daily lives. Together we can help our children develop positive attitudes toward themselves and others, both those who are different from them and those who are the same. |

Program hours vary among the different school districts, as described in Appendix material. In general, morning and afternoon programming will operate according to the following description. Please note, care for Kindergarteners by the program is only provided before school in Westerville (7-9 AM) and New Albany (6:45-8:10 or 9 AM) and/or after school in Westerville and New Albany (3-6 PM) and Gahanna (2-6 PM). The morning session will include a breakfast (with one food from each of three food groups) such as cereal, juice and milk. During the afternoon, the children will have daily outside play time in suitable weather or large motor activity, participate in the special project for the day, complete homework or choose from interest areas such as crafts, discovery, dramatic play, blocks and word fun. A nutritious snack, with one food from each of two food groups, will be provided in the afternoon such as wheat, soda or graham crackers, fruit, low sugar cookies and juice or milk. If needed, nutritious snack food may be brought from home as a supplement to the portions served. All food served at the program follows the guidelines required by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Day Care Licensing rules and the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines.
