School History:

Scholarship · Leadership · Integrity · Character

The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida approved a school for girls in 2006. Owing to the great success of the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy, its counterpart, the Young Men’s Preparatory Academy opened in 2008.
The structure of the Young Men’s Preparatory Academy is based on single gender research by noted education experts such as Leonard Sax. This research led to an understanding of how schools can capitalize on innate gender differences to help students reach their full potential.
The faculty and staff are committed to upholding the distinguished and unique learning environment and, the Covey 7 Habits Leadership Program at the Young Men’s Preparatory Academy. The Academy consists of two buildings with 34,000 square feet. Particular attention is given to space utilization and furnishings to meet the physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs of the school’s single gender population.
Under the leadership and guidance of Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, the Academy exemplifies the ambitious reform of the District’s secondary schools. The Young Men’ s Preparatory Academy serves as a viable public school option for male students in Miami-Dade County.

Young Men’s Preparatory Academy’s leadership curriculum is based on the principles of Sean Covey’s, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” This curriculum instills in the students leadership skills that emphasize personal and social responsibility, problem-solving, valuing differences and diversity, teamwork, and maximizing potential and productivity. The curriculum and academy programs include advanced and honors courses that prepare the young men for the rigor and challenges of college and post-secondary matriculation. Advanced placement courses and dual enrollment opportunities are also available for the students to earn college credit while completing high school graduation requirements.

Young Men’s Preparatory Academy is a single-gender, college preparatory high school. Single gender education focuses on an energetic learning environment that nurtures the different educational interests of young men, and allows them to be self-directed and apply themselves without the distraction of impressing female classmates. The young men participate in monthly leadership symposiums hosted by prominent business and civic leaders who share their leadership experiences.
