Celebrate Communication 2009

Now in its 6th year, Celebrate Communication is the premier event for deaf and hard of hearing people, their families and friends in the metro area. With over 50 exhibitors, you can discover a wealth of information all in one place! See the latest about hearing aids and cochlear implants, hot new technologies, government services, great resources, support groups and more. Test equipment, talk to professionals, and learn strategies that help improve communication. Artists and crafters, activities for children, door prizes and a snack bar help make this a fun day for the whole family. This event is hosted by the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons and the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities.

Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) serves people of all ages -- deaf, deaf-blind, late-deafened, hard of hearing, parents of deaf or hard of hearing children, and children of deaf or hard of hearing parents, family and co-workers. It also provides services to those who employ, serve, or seek to learn more about these individuals such as educational institutions, sign language interpreters, cued speech and oral transliterators, CART and captioning providers, government agencies, professional and nonprofit organizations, and businesses.
NVRC provides information and referrals through its extensive database of resources and network of subject matter experts. The center offers free workshops, a daily email news service, and an active website. Its outreach staff conduct presentations, support groups, and exhibits.
The technology demonstration room at NVRC is equipped with various specialized telephone options, assistive listening systems for meetings, television watching, and other uses, signaling systems to alert to such things as doorbells and phone rings, and much more. It offers an opportunity for individuals to try equipment before making a purchase elsewhere.
NVRC serves as the regional outreach center for the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) and its state Loan2Own program and Technology Assistance Program, which make free or low cost equipment available to qualified Virginia residents who have a hearing loss.
Free meeting space is offered to numerous all-volunteer nonprofit organizations and support groups that serve the deaf and hard of hearing community, and NVRC also provides staff support and other assistance for some of their educational programs and events.
NVRC’s Executive Director actively advocates on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their families. NVRC ‘s staff regularly conduct surveys, track policy and legislation, attend conferences and meetings to learn of new program, technology and best practices, and stay in contact with many other local, state and national organizations to spot emerging trends in needs and opportunities.
