Test Use:

The AAPPL is unlike any assessment. It is a proficiency and performance assessment that addresses the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. It uses today's communication media as the context in which test takers perform tasks such as participating in virtual video chat, creating wikis, and writing email messages to demonstrate language ability.

The hallmark of an authentic assessment is that it promotes further learning. The AAPPL measures growth, and its robust reporting tools offer detailed analysis and feedback as well as strategies for continued development of language proficiency.

Evaluate students' progress against stated proficiency goals
With the AAPPL, you can evaluate if the stated proficiency goals are being met and are reasonable. The AAPPL reports can also assist you in determining what the proficiency goals should be.

Benchmark students' progress and promote further learning
AAPPL reports allow extensive data analysis and reporting. Data in the AAPPL School Report offers a glimpse at trends in students' progress-towards-proficiency across multiple attributes:

  • component being tested (ILS, IL/IR, PW)
  • language
  • class/teacher
  • type of instruction
  • year of instruction

The AAPPL score reports include detailed score descriptions that identify what your learners are successfully able to do in the language. This also allows students to understand their rating. The score reports also include a strategy section, providing specific strategies for progressing along the learning continuum and helping learners to continue growing in the language.

Analyze program performance
The AAPPL reporting tools allow you to compare your learners' scores to national data. This can help you understand where your program's strengths and opportunities lie, as compared to similar programs nationally. This can also help you evaluate your curriculum and implement any curricular changes and training.

Seal of Biliteracy
Recognized by 49 states, the Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district, or state board of education in recognition of students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages by their high school graduation. Proficiency-based ACTFL assessments can be used to help learners attain the Seal of Biliteracy.

Juniors and seniors can test using AAPPL Form B in 10 languages and ALIRA in Latin.

The OPI/WPT for the Seal of Biliteracy, provides a multi-skill assessment option for students to demonstrate proficiency in less-commonly-taught languages. It is available in 26 languages and testing is available from January through May each year.

Test Length:

The AAPPL is not timed. On average, it takes approximately 30 minutes per component. The AAPPL is available in four components, and they may be taken separately or all together. If the test is interrupted, the work is saved, and the test taker can return to it at a later time.

Test Format:

The AAPPL is an online assessment, accessible on computers, Chromebooks, and tablets. It is available in four components: Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, Interpersonal Listening and Speaking, and Presentational Writing. Each component can be taken separately or all four can be admistered all at once. Each section of the test is introduced by a teacher who explains what to expect in each test component. The AAPPL is also the only test that offers true interpersonal listening and speaking (ILS). In this component, learners engage in a video chat conversation with a student on the screen by responding to his/her questions. The context of the interaction is that of having a conversation with a video chat partner who speaks the target language.

Results Reported:

Scores and reports are available in the Client Site. Listening and reading scores are available within 24 hours. Writing and Interpersonal Listening and Speaking scores are available within 10 days but can take up to 14 days during heavy testing season.

Test Description:

The ACTFL Assessments of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is unlike any other assessment. It is a proficiency and performance assessment that addresses the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and uses today's communication media as the context, in which test takers perform tasks such as participating in a virtual video chat and writing email messages to demonstrate language ability.

The ACTFL Assessment and Research Team, along with their Quality Assurance Advisors and other language educator consultants throughout the nation, developed the AAPPL and consistently update it to provide current and relevant content for language learners.

The AAPPL has three test forms for language learners:
Form A addresses Novice and Intermediate Levels.
Form B addresses Intermediate to Advanced Low.
Form E addresses Novice and Intermediate Levels, with content specifically for 3rd & 4th
graders (ILS component only).
