Many enjoy the professional and volunteer activities provided by the Student Nurse Organization. Academic support exists in the form of peer tutors, math and writing centers as well as an academic advising center and federal TRIO program to advise students with financial challenges, who are the first generation in their family to attend college, or who have a documented learning disability.

The city, which has about 8,000 residents within its city limits today, was founded in the 19th century by lumber operators, but quickly became a boomtown in the 1890s after the discovery of oil in the area. It is known for its rich history, cool climate and as the home of the iconic Zippo lighter. Community events enjoyed by students include car shows, Pumpkin Fest, and the Marilla Winter Trek. The community is home to a hospital and three nursing homes.

Majors:

Associate of Science in Nursing Program: the Associate of Science in Nursing Program was established in 1979 in order to meet a critical need for nurses in the northwestern Pennsylvania region. The first class of ASN-prepared nurses graduated in 1981. Pitt-Bradford is located in McKean County and is surrounded by five other rural Appalachian counties: Cameron, Elk, Forest, Potter, and Warren. Historically, the majority of Pitt-Bradford students have come from the local six counties. The number and quality of graduates from the Associate of Science in Nursing program exert a significant, positive impact upon the health care services provided to local and surrounding communities. Area health care facilities are eager to employ graduates because the school has a reputation for providing high-quality nurses who remain in the local and surrounding communities.

A track is established to promote Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) to earn the Associate of Science in Nursing Degree

RN-To-BSN Completion Program (Bachelors of Science in Nursing): The RN-BSN Completion Program was established in 1994 under the auspices of the Pitt-Oakland (UPO) School of Nursing to meet a demand from regional Associate of Science in Nursing prepared nurses, and also to raise the educational level of the nursing workforce within the northwestern Pennsylvania region. The program remained affiliated with the UPO School of Nursing for the first three years of the program (1995-1997), as UPO had a long and rich history of baccalaureate nursing education, and would provide much-needed expertise and guidance for the Bradford faculty. In 1998, Pitt Bradford assumed full responsibility and oversight of the program.

Pitt-Bradford offers 51 other majors and over 50 minors.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Nursing is a practice profession, an art, and a science that occurs in a variety of acute, long term, and community settings. The goal of nursing is to promote adaptation and the Individual's need for self-care, on a continuous basis across the life cycle. Nursing practice involves the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health. Nurses utilize theories/concepts from the natural and social sciences and nursing and health information technologies as a basis for critical thinking and problem solving.

Nursing practice is a caring relationship between the Individual and nurse that promotes culturally responsive health and quality of life and a dignified and peaceful death. Within the context of interprofessional teamwork, nurses are committed to relationship-centered care that makes accessible safe and cost-effective quality care within an atmosphere that respects the dignity and worth of all persons. In practice, nurses utilize the nursing process to provide, manage, advocate, collaborate, and delegate appropriately with others in the provision of care for clients with health needs.

Nurses recognize the value of nursing research and participate in the research process at varying levels to discover creative and innovative solutions to nursing practice problems. Nurses commit to a culture of excellence through the utilization of evidence-based research as the basis for decision making in practice.
