Mission Statement: The mission of the East Los Angeles Performing Arts Magnet Academy is to develop creative, contributing member of society through a standards-based curriculum featuring rigorous interdisciplinary instruction that is rich in the performing arts.
Philosophy/Belief Statement: All students learn better when their interests and passions are linked to their academic experiences. All students have the capacity and deserve the opportunity to develop their talents and express themselves through the performing arts. Giving students access to the cultural riches of their community, including concerts, plays, museums and other experiential learning opportunities, is a vital part of preparing them to be informed and thoughtful citizens of the world.
School History: The school was founded in 2010 by a group of teachers, students, parents and community organizations to address the long-standing challenges of low educational attainment in East Los Angeles. At that time there were no high schools focused on the performing arts in the area that were accessible to students who had limited prior experience in the arts. The school is designed to meet the needs of students who are already studying the arts as well as students who are interested in exploring the arts. Intervention and student support programs are essential parts of the school's strategies for raising student achievement and graduation rates.
In 2013, the school was selected for a long-term grant from Exploring the Arts/Tony Bennett Foundation.
