The mission of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is to advance physical therapy practice using best evidence and interprofessional educational opportunities that engage and support students in their development into knowledgeable, skilled, reflective, and collaborative practitioners. These characteristics will reflect the values and principles of contemporary health care with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life of all communities, holding a deep commitment to the vast Appalachian region.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
The Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Lincoln Memorial University is grounded in the belief that excellence in physical therapy education requires a commitment to evidence-based practice, interprofessional collaboration, and service to diverse communities. Central to this philosophy is the development of students who demonstrate thorough knowledge and sound critical reasoning skills to make appropriate clinical decisions, who apply the skills necessary to integrate research into clinical decision-making, and who work effectively as members of interprofessional teams to provide quality health care.
The program is committed to preparing graduates who serve as competent physical therapists, engage in lifelong learning, and are prepared to function effectively within interprofessional health care teams. Through a spiral curriculum model that progressively builds complexity and a campus environment rich with interprofessional opportunities, the program cultivates practitioners who embody the core values of the profession while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of patients and communities. Program History:
The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program enrolled its first cohort in May 2021. This inaugural cohort graduated in May 2024. The program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The program's ultimate two-year pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is 85%. Graduation rates are 97-100%, and the employment rate is 97% one year post-graduation.
Program Information:
The Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Lincoln Memorial University is a full-time, residential program housed within the College of Mathematics, Sciences and Health Professions. The curriculum is delivered over nine semesters spanning three years, including 34 weeks of full-time clinical education experiences distributed across four internships. The program utilizes a systems-based, spiral curriculum model in which new topics and concepts are introduced, then emphasized and later reinforced at increasing levels of complexity. This approach allows for a logical progression from simplistic to complicated ideas, with information being solidified each time students revisit the subject matter. Students are encouraged to apply and build upon early foundational knowledge to later courses, creating a comprehensive learning experience that prepares them for entry-level practice.
The program's mission emphasizes advancing physical therapy practice through best evidence and interprofessional educational opportunities that engage and support students in their development into knowledgeable, skilled, reflective, and collaborative practitioners who can improve the quality of life of all communities, with a deep commitment to the vast Appalachian region. What makes LMU's program unique is its location on a campus alongside other health care professional programs including Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant with Surgical Focus, and Doctor of Occupational Therapy, providing rich opportunities for interprofessional education and collaboration.
