Mission Statement:
A community of learners where the wonderful in each child is known and nurtured, where learning is catalyzed by student inquiry and academic adventure and where every graduate is ready for college, career and citizenship.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
CBHS is intentionally small so that we can get to know each student deeply, and so we can better personalize
instruction that will help students become their best selves. Our instruction is driven by Learning Expeditions
that result in quality work about genuine problems for a real audience. Learning Expeditions are long-term, in-depth
studies of a single topic that explore compelling social-justice questions, incorporate vital standards, involve fieldwork,
and culminate in an authentic project, product or performance.
Enrollment Characteristics: The school can currently only house 275 students so their is a lottery system in place for Portland Public School district students.
School History:
Founded in 2005, the school began with a small class of Freshaman and now CBHS is a school
of choice for about 275 students (9-12) with a waiting list. The Class of 2009 was our first graduating class, and
99% of our graduates have been accepted to college so far. At Casco Bay, we challenge and support our
students to become college-ready through our 3Rs: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships.
Casco Bay High School is part of a national cohort of high-achieving, progressive and urban high
schools in the Expeditionary Learning network (www.elschools.org). Casco Bay students have consistently
exceeded city and state averages on the MHSA and SATs. Last spring, Casco Bay was chosen as a
"Model School" by the International Center for Leadership in Education, and was featured by Edutopia
(www.edutopia.org) as part of their "Schools that Work" series.
Notable Graduates:
The 51 graduates of the class of 2010 were accepted to 83 different post secondary institutions and opted to attend institutions such as Brown, Bates, Smith and Yale as well as state colleges and universities. 81% of the class were accepted to 4-year universities.
