Mission Statement:
Woody Gap School will provide a quality educational environment that will prepare our students to become productive citizens within and beyond our rural community.
School History:
Our buliding was built in 1938 using rock that was quarried locally. Eleven one room schools combined to make Woody Gap School. Basketball practice use to be outside at the dirt court and the games were all away. Now we have a $1.2 million gym with all the latest technology. Community members came together using their tractors to make the ball fields behind the school. Lunch was once served out of the basement using local donations for food and volunteer cooks. Now we have a modern cafeteria with one cafeteria worker that feeds our entire school.
Notes/School Information:
Our community is a very safe environment for our students to get an education that will take them to enjoy post-secondary education. We have had many graduates from our community go on and do great things in life. Our school still celebrates some of the old traditions. Each year we gather under a pavilion for a "Back to School Bash". Community members, grandparents, parents, teachers, and students gather to celebrate the start of another great school year. Community members and parents coordinate a festival each year to help fund our school. Vendors can get a booth application at www.suches.com. We have mountain music, clogging, a play by the elementary students, an auction by the althetic department to pay for uniforms and tennis shoes each season. They also have a big mountain square dance that proceeds are given to the seniors for post-secondary education. Our seniors teach our kindergarteners how to fish with a cane pole on the banks of the beautiful trout-stocked Canada Creek that runs through the campus. The whole community comes together for the fourth of July each year. They have duck races in the creek and mountain music playing before the awesome firework show that many counties around us travel just to see.
We do have basketball, tennis, and golf as our sports. You do not have to tryout for a basketball team. We always need everyone to have enough for a team.
We have our "old fashion" ways and our own traditions that make us a unique community. It is a great experience once you join the Suches community and attend our school. We are like no other public schools in our time.
