Description:
Located in historic downtown Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the Missouri River, we're a great place for friends and family to come and learn about the Union Pacific Railroad. Explore American history through the lens of the railroad as visitors encounter an extensive compilation of items from more than 150 years of our nation's western history, including artifacts, photographs, documents and equipment.

Max. Group Number: 40 Students and Adults. Arrangements can be made at the time of reservation if groups are larger.
Group Requirements: Minimum of 10 Students required for most Programs.
Exhibits: On the first level, you will find the Building America exhibit, which chronicles the history of the transcontinental railroad and railroad operations during the 19th century. We also have Temporary Exhibits displayed on our first level.
On the second level, you will find the America Travels By Rail and Working on the Railroad exhibits. America Travels By Rail covers the golden age of American passenger travel in the early-mid 20th century. Working on the Railroad explores the modern railroad, and features our popular train simulator.
Gift Shop/Factory Outlet: Some merchandise sold on site in the Museum Gift Shop.
Amenities: All parking around the museum is metered street parking. Meters cost $0.50 per hour from 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. Meters are free on Saturdays and Sundays. Education Programs and Bus Tours include free parking for buses in front of the museum.
Reservations Needed: Reservations for Private Tours and Education Programs can be made through our website or by calling the museum.

Facility History:
Located in downtown Council Bluffs, Iowa, our museum was once the old Carnegie Public Library that was the largest Carnegie library in the state of Iowa (This is why the front of the building says "Free Public Library"). Built 1904-1905, it operated as a library until 1998. The museum opened in the building in 2003.
