History:
Challenge Island has been in operation, nationally, for 14 years. It was started by nationally known parenting author and teacher, Sharon Duke Estroff, out of Atlanta, GA. She was watching Survivor during a maternity leave, and thought the concept would work well, to teach children science. She began designing the curriculum and tried it at the school where she taught, and they immediately loved it, and made it a permanent fixture in their school's curriculum. From there, it was was seen by a franchise developer and it took off! Now, Challenge Island is franchised to many states and countries throughout the world! Challenge Island is found by looking up Challenge-island.com to find the many states where it is provided. Washington State has just one owner, Tamara Gonzalez, teaching in Seattle and Eastside for 3 years, now, starting in December, 2013.
Program Highlights:
Challenge Island is a remarkably fun and entertaining program for youngsters that applies STEM principle in each challenge they must tackle. Children originally "land" on islands, then travel around them, stopping 8 times, making an 8 week program. Each stop has a teaching element, including the STEM principle, but also a lesson from the island's theme. Many themes are used: Shark Tooth, Amusement Park, Carnival, Volcano, Time Travel, Mythology, and Hollywood. Each child is placed in a team, and they wear face paint and tribal buffs to make the team spirit come alive! With team names, the completion of team building is followed by each team tackling challenges as a group. Children learn fun principles like potential energy and kinetic energy, using pipe insulation cut into long funnels, and marbles as a car, the teams build roller coasters to apply these principles. They work as groups, so learn social skills. They talk in class about their challenges, and practice public speaking. They must use critical thinking skills to finish challenges. They use scientific design process, and application. This is a wonderful program that covers it all!
