Program Highlights:
The trail crew trips will work on improving the trail corridor in such ways as improving the trail tread, removing brush, building benches or bridges, repainting blazes on trees, installing signs
Support Services:
We will supervise the trip and will provide needed tools and personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, eye protection). Workers must wear long pants and sturdy shoes such as hikiing boots, and bring a day backpack with lunch and water.
Activities:
We will spend the day working on the trail tread or removing brush or possibly building a bridge or benches or repainting blazes or installing trail signs. Trips vary as to the project needed.
Field Trip Destinations: We will be driving on forest service roads in the Cherokee National Forest near Tellico Plains then hike in to the work site. Generally the hike will be less than a mile or two
Program Information:
The Warriors Passage National Recreation Trail was constructed by Boy Scouts from the Knoxville area over 50 years ago and is actively hiked and backpacked by Scout and other youth groups. Part of the requirement to earn a patch is to learn the history of the area. This trail was the original Cherokee Indian footpath across the Appalachian Mountains into Southeast Tennessee and was later used by traders, setters and soldiers. The history of the trail is on our website www.warriorspassage.org. Youth groups may take a day hike or an overnight backpack trip.
Those youth groups who perform a day of trail maintenance receive a free t-shirt.
