Our Jesuit Identity
We are the parish school for St. Thomas More Catholic Church which is sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). We share the society’s mission to spread God’s love with others. As a school, we are committed to the Jesuit traditions of academic excellence, the service of faith, and the promotion of justice.
Saint Thomas More School is an important ministry of St. Thomas More parish, focused on educating students within the tenets of Jesuit traditions and Ignatian spirituality. These traditions include academic excellence, critical thinking, social action, the development of moral character and the presupposition of goodness in others. The hallmark of Jesuit education is its focus on educating the whole child: mind, body and spirit.
School History:
Affectionately called "STM", Saint Thomas More Catholic School is and has provided an education combining academic excellence and Gospel values to children in Decatur, Georgia and the surrounding communities for over seven decades. Our highly qualified teachers and staff, parents, and students have formed a tightly-knit community we call our "STM family."
Saint Thomas More Catholic School opened on September 1, 1950, with approximately 140 children in grades 1-5. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur staffed the school. Grades 6, 7, and 8 were added in successive years.
In 1955, the lower school building was constructed. This facility relieved some overcrowding and provided space for a kindergarten. By the end of the 1980’s, the number of students again created a need for expanded facilities. In June 2000, the last of the teaching sisters of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur retired. The convent building was renovated to house parish offices, meeting spaces, and additional classrooms.
In 2002, St. Thomas More constructed the Notre Dame de Namur Center, a multipurpose building with a full-sized gymnasium, stage, and music and band rooms.
In early 2016, Archbishop Wilton Gregory invited priests of the Society of Jesus to staff Saint Thomas More parish. With their arrival, the parish school took on the characteristics of a school in the tradition of the Jesuits, although still governed by the policies set by the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
In 2024, we began our most substantial campus work to date: a new two-story, 12-classroom building for kindergarten through 5th Grade which will be followed by renovation of some existing school space.

From the moment you step on to our campus at Saint Thomas More Catholic School, you can feel the difference. Joy is abundant! Our happy students are engaged in learning from our dedicated and highly qualified faculty in an academically challenging, innovative, faith-filled, and rewarding learning environment.
As a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence serving Pre-K4 - 8th grade students, we provide an academically challenging and engaging education. We are a Catholic school inspired by the Jesuits to seek God in all things. In developing both our students' minds and souls to the fullest, they are prepared to use their talents when reaching out compassionately in service for others.
While academic success and building a faith foundation are at the center of our school life, clubs and leadership opportunities, extracurricular activities, and athletics enrich our joyful learning community. Plus, they just make school life more fun! Providing technological resources and skills help prepare our students for the future, and supporting their academic, social, and emotional needs helps them to achieve their full potential and be successful in school.
