Philosophy/Belief Statement:
For our students:
- We believe that all children have gifts and it is our mission to help them discover these gifts.
- We believe it is in wonder, inquiry and discovery that the magic happens.
- We believe the learning process is more important than the end result.
- We believe that when children are heard and valued they become leaders and self-advocates.
- We believe that children have a right to feel safe and to be accepted for who they are without judgment.
- We believe that emotional and social IQ is just as important to success as academic achievement.
- We believe that questions are more important than answers.
For our community
- We believe a community is a place of emotional safety.
- We believe a strong school community is a place where everyone belongs and feels seen for who they are.
- We believe with an emotionally safe and strong community, anything can be achieved.
- We believe in partnering with families to raise children well.
- We believe that investing in teachers will create a rich learning environment.
School History: Welcome, bienvenido, and 歡迎!
I’m Wendy, Founder and Head of School at The Terra Schools. I’m excited that you’re considering our program for your child.
I know how hard it is as a working parent to find a great school for your child. There are long waitlists for daycare and preschool, public school lotteries are unpredictable and stressful, and even “good schools” in the suburbs have large class sizes where children are deprived of the attention they need to thrive.
That’s why I founded Presidio Knolls School (PKS) in 2008, a Mandarin-immersion school located in the SoMa district of SF. I founded PKS so my daughter could learn Mandarin in a nurturing community space inspired by the Reggio-Emilia approach to student development.
Five years ago in 2018, eager to bring my expertise to a new program with unrivaled outdoor learning opportunities, I opened The Terra Schools in Mill Valley for students who shared my daughter’s love of experiential learning. The Terra Schools include Terra Marin, Terra Mandarin Preschool & Transitional Kindergarten, and Terra Spanish Preschool.
Teachers are at the heart of our program. With a <1% acceptance rate, we hire only teachers who can create magical learning experiences in the classroom. Our teachers have previous experience teaching in Forest, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Language Immersion schools. And small student-teacher ratios (5:1 in preschool through transitional kindergarten, 8:1 in kindergarten through 8th grade) allow our teachers to provide the personalized attention your child needs to thrive.
I’m excited to announce that we are opening a new location in San Francisco, which will start as a Mandarin Immersion Kindergarten & Transitional Kindergarten. You’re invited to our weekly virtual info session to learn more about it.

Notes/School Information:
Who we are
The Terra Schools are a nature-based, trilingual Mandarin, Spanish, and English program for preschoolers through 8th graders.
Fluency in Spanish and/or Mandarin is achieved through a strong foundation of language immersion in the early years, followed by language infusion in later years. Engaging, passionate teachers harness students' enthusiasm to accelerate traditional academic learning, with interactive projects and student-led discussions inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. A personalized curriculum with low student-teacher ratios empowers young minds to grow beyond what traditional classrooms offer. We aim to spark wonder, a love of learning, and 21st century leadership skills through weekly nature-based excursions. Our culture of kindness is infused throughout the community and bolstered by dedicated Social Emotional Learning staff and curriculum.
What people are saying
"I have two daughters who have been fortunate to progress through the entire Terra Mandarin PK and TK curriculum. I couldn't dream up a better foundation for their academic, social and emotional lives. They have grown so much through immersion in Mandarin language and culture, as well as nature immersion. The teachers are highly educated, and thoroughly trained and supported. They are also some of the kindest and most giving people I have met. The depth and richness of the program is far beyond anything I have encountered elsewhere." ~Mom of recent Terra Mandarin Preschool & TK graduates
"Together, we have created The Terra Schools, and together we will continue to build a school where our individual dreams and goals can come to life." ~Shauna Sullivan, Assistant Head of School
