Philosophy/Belief Statement:
To Our JCC Friends and Family:
It is another exciting year at the JCC. If you are a returning member, welcome back. If you are considering the JCC, we strive to be inclusive of everyone in the Greater Worcester community-we are a true community center. We hope you and your family will join us.
This year's guide represents an increasing emphasis on programming that has been created, reworked and tweaked to be responsive to your needs and wants. While we continue to have the best early childhood, summer camps and youth basketball programs, we have expanded and improved everything from the fitness equipment to adult basketball leagues. We have an entirely new basketball gym, the area's most extensive offering of Les Mills group exercise programs, and have introduced small group training to meet your demands for a more intensive work out.
The JCC serves a diverse community and is open to all. We are proud to offer need-based scholarships. Our single most important objective continues to be to provide the Worcester community with the friendliest service and the highest quality programming that constantly evolves to meet your needs.

Center History:
The Worcester Jewish Community Center has been an institution of excellence for nearly 60 years.
Organized in the 1940's as an activity center for Jewish youth, the JCC first occupied the second floor of Mr. Abe Persky's factory building on Franklin street in downtown Worcester.
In 1951, due to the growth of the local Jewish population and the need for more broad-based services, the Worcester Post of the Jewish War Veterans donated a building at 111 Elm Street as a new home for the Center.
From 1951, through the mid-1960's, the Center grew and flourished. Youth programs were popular, activities for younger children were developed, and active groups of volunteer leaders drove the Center to the forefront of Jewish life.
In 1965 community leaders once again saw a need to expand, modernize, and relocate the Center in order to keep pace with the growth and geographic movement of the Jewish population. Visionaries purchased land on Salisbury Street and a massive campaign to raise funds to buld a new Jewish Community Center was begun.
The "new" Center opened in 1967 and again the JCC was at the core of Jewish life in Worcester.
By 1988 we had once again outgrown the existing facility as confirmed by a comprehensive strategic study. In response to the findings of this study, a Capital Campaign was initiated in October 1993. the result of this campaign is our current beautiful physical plant.
Opened in 1996, the indoor regulation swimming pool, health and fitness center, and state-of-the-art early childhood education wings are proud additions, contributing to the overall growth and success of our center.

Nancy Greenberg, Cultural Arts and Senior Adult Director, ext. 232, ngreenberg@worcesterjcc.org
The Adult Department offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. If you have time to spare, we will match your talents to our needs! Volunteers are needed as phone friends, friendly visitors, nursing home visitors, drivers, foster grandparents, mailings, hostesses at congregate meals, nursery school aides and more. If you would like to be involved call Nancy, x 232.
While you provide valuable service, you'll make new friendships, develop new skills and, perhaps most important, experience the satisfaction that comes from helping others. You decide when you're available. Whether it's one evening a week, once or twice a month or only a single day, we need your help. Tell us about your special interests, your skills and the type of work you might enjoy. Maybe you have no idea what you'd like to do. That's fine, too. Here are some suggestions...
Driver: Transport people to appointments.
Escort: Accompany a senior to an appointment.
Foster Grandparent: Visit a child or teenager for an hour each week.
Friendly Visitor: Visit an isolated elderly person in his/her home for an hour each week.
Host/Hostess at Congregate Meals: Set-up, serve and clean-up from twice-weekly Congregate Lunch program at Bet Shalom.
Man Talk Volunteer: Tuesday - Help set-up, serve and clean-up from breakfast for weekly mens group.
Nursery School Aide: Visit and assist JCC and Temple Emanuel Nursery Schools for 3 hours each week.
Nursing Home Visitor: Visit Jewish residents in an area nursing home for an hour each week.
Phone Friend: Make daily reassurance phone call to an isolated elderly person.
Senior Reader: Visit and read to kindergarten and first-grade students 1 hour each week.
"The ride program of the JCC volunteer department has been an important part of my life. The volunteer drivers have given me rides over the years to scheduled doctors' appointments. When I unexpectedly needed a ride to the pharmacy or lab, Sue Granoff made every effort to provide me with a ride asap.
The drivers are considerate and helpful. I have not found any other program like this in Worcester for those of us who don't drive due to the infirmities of aging or temporary or chronic disabilities.
This service has definitely made my life easier. I hope the program is around for many, many years.
Thanks to Sue and the drivers."
