Bethel believes that the quality of life, dignity, independence and purpose are essential to happiness at any age. For nearly a century, Bethel has dedicated itself to older Americans who want to experience life to the fullest, but may need a helping hand along the way. That is our heritage, our mission, and our inspiration.
History: Bethel Home was incorporated in 1911, the founders chose to name it after the “Bethel Ship of John Wesley,” a floating chapel that had been moored in New York harbor for over 30 years beginning in 1845 to serve newly-arrived Swedish immigrants. The New Bethel Swedish Methodist Episcopal Home for the Aged was therefore authorized by the Swedish Methodist Conference in 1911, and opened in Brooklyn, NY in 1914. In 1920, the home was expanded and relocated to a site in Ossining, NY.

Guidelines for Volunteering at Bethel Homes
All Bethel volunteers (except for Family-Member Volunteers and Occasional Volunteers) must be at least 16 years of age.
Family members of a Bethel Homes resident/client that would like to volunteer must be at least 21 years of age. Family-Member Volunteers will be offered volunteer positions that do not take place on the same unit or in the same department as their related resident/client, so as to avoid a conflict of interest. The purpose of this policy is to have a clear separation of the role of a family member vs. the role of being a Bethel volunteer.
All volunteer candidates that are 18 years of age or older must be willing to give permission to Bethel to conduct a background check and an inquiry through the nurse aid registry. Bethel’s Human Resources Department will conduct this portion of the review and the results will be maintained in a secured area.
All volunteer candidates are required to provide the following health information:
· A copy of your most recent physical exam from your doctor *
· A copy of your most recent PPD (TB test) results from your doctor *
· A copy of your mumps, measles and rubella immunization records from your doctor
*Physical exam and PPD test must have taken place within the past twelve (12) months.
All volunteer candidates must be willing to abide by Bethel’s dress code.
