Mission Statement:
MedShare, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving healthcare and the environment through the efficient recovery and redistribution of surplus medical supplies and equipment to those most in need, in our local community and in economically developing countries. We collect surplus medical supplies and equipment from hospitals, distributors, and manufacturers, and then redistribute it to qualified healthcare facilities that provide care to the underserved. We also outfit medical missions and safety net clinics in both the U.S. and abroad. This process offers U.S. health care providers an environmentally and socially responsible alternative to throwing away medical materials.
Program History:
MedShare Western Region was opened in San Leandro in 2008 as the second distribution center of this national non-profit organization. MedShare was started in Atlanta, GA in 1998. MedShare’s founders, A.B. Short and Bob Freeman, were concerned with the critical healthcare needs of the underserved populations throughout the world and the environmental threat of discarded medical supplies and equipment. In 1999 MedShare shipped its first 40-foot container of medical supplies. The container went to Costa Rica.
