Mission Statement:
We provide financial solutions and training, offer access to quality education in the rural sector, and work hand in hand with communities to help them realize their goals of development. Through these measures, we empower people living in poverty to transform their lives, their children's futures, and their communities.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
Our vision is a world in which all people have the opportunity to achieve a life free from poverty, with dignity and purpose. We respond to Jesus Christ's call to love and serve the poor. We seek to emulate the Good Samaritan, whose compassion crossed ethnic groups and religion. We serve all people regardless or race, faith, ethnicity, or gender.
Program History:
Opportunity International has been working in Nicaragua for over a decade. We have developed a hollistic approach to combating poverty based on community economic development. Of Nicaragua's 5.8 million citizens, 42% are living below the line of poverty, with the majority living in rural areas working in agriculture. Opportunity Internation has created an agricultural program that directly addresses this issue. We work hand in hand with small holder farmers, providing financial solutions and training to farmers in the South Pacific region.
As an extension of our agriculture program, Opportunity International works with these rural communities to help facilitate various community projects. From gaining access to potable water to building dignified roofs, Opportunity staff work with community leaders every step of the way to help them realise their goals of development.
There can be no true progress without education. Opportunity International founded a secondary school in Diriomo that offers a quality education to students from rural communities. The school operates a small agribusiness with the goal of becoming self-sustainable.
Using this hollistic approach to development, Opportunity International continues to work to offer opportunities to people working their way out of poverty.
