Population Served: residents
Ages for Volunteer: 21 and older
Minimum Hours of Service Required: afternoon classes, 5 days per week
Days of Service: 3 month minimum for English instructors; 6 week minimum for other volunteers
Languages: Spanish language study opportunities
Languages used as a Medium: English for English instructors; some Spanish for all other volunteers
Experience Required:
English instructors are asked to have the TEFL certificate and some experience teaching. Some Spanish good, but not required.
Programs Open To: Adaptable adults who wish be be immersed in another culture.
Travel Arrangements:
Volunteers arrange their own travel to and from Costa Rica. PSG can make suggestions and assist with transfers.
Participants Work: Skills development for rural community members.

Mission Statement:
The focus of Proyecto San Gerardo is to support the San Gerardo de Rivas community in its efforts to be self sustaining so that community members find additional opportunities to generate income in San Gerardo.
Specific goals include:
• To help develop the skills needed for the community to engage in ecotourism and small business ventures in an environmentally friendly way
• To support San Gerardo´s own development initiatives, building on local skills
• To promote San Gerardo as a tourist destination
• To support the needs of women and youth in the community
Program History:
On a visit to San Gerardo in 2006 the 2 current co-directors, Liz and Jenny Moss, were asked to provide English classes to the community to enable them to work in the local tourism businesses. English classes, first aid and women's exercise classes began in 2007. In 2008 computer classes began. A web site has been designed to promote San Gerardo as a tourism destination. The project works very closely with the local Community Association and the Camara de Turismo
Events:
Current projects:
• English conversation classes for adults and youth in three centres
• Children's English classes at Herradura Elementary school
• Computer classes: keyboarding, basic computer programs and internet
• Drop in access to the internet
• First Aid courses
• Café Bambú - our centre and community café
• Farmer's market every Sunday working with local small-scale producers
• Events for children & adults: painting and baking classes, children's stories, youth night
• Apprenticeship restaurant program
• Scholarship program for high school and university students in the region
• Continual updating of this website with news for the community and visitors
• Linking up with other community projects in the region
• Recruiting and managing an active international volunteer program

The community welcomes PSG volunteers and encourages participation in village fiestas and activities.
