Mission Statement:
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers
and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles
of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims
of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
The American Red Cross is not a government agency,
nor does the Red Cross receive funding from
the federal, state or local governments.
Our emergency services are free and made possible by donations of time and money from the American people.

Disaster Response Team Member
Description Serve in your communities, statewide, and/or nationally when disaster strikes as part of Red Cross disaster teams
Responsibilities
Disaster Action Team (DAT) members are the first response to disasters and emergencies at the local level. Responsibilities include providing essential Red Cross emergency assistance such as food, clothing, shelter, and emotional support to victims of residential fires; registering all individuals and families involved in the disaster and completing Red Cross caseworker forms; serving as the Red Cross point of contact with Emergency Officials at the scene of a disaster. (DAT members must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license to be on-call.)
Time Commitment2-4 hours, depending on the nature of the fire and number of people affected.
Disaster Relief Specialistsare activated when there are “larger” disasters and Red Cross is called to open shelters and provide community or area disaster relief. This can occur on the local, state, and national levels. Disaster relief specialists are engaged in sheltering, feeding, logistics, client casework, health services or mental health services (if you are licensed in these fields}, partner services (working with local government or voluntary agencies), public affairs, shelter evaluations, disaster assessments and staffing. Time Commitment One (1) year.
*Note: All disaster services training is free to volunteers.
Community Disaster Education (CDE) Presenter
Description educate the public in emergency and disaster preparedness through the Community Disaster Education presentations to school groups, community groups and other public venues. Volunteers can also participate in other community events and serve as Red Cross representatives in promoting the mission of the American Red Cross, fundraising and recruiting volunteers.
Responsibilities can include any or all of the following:
- Working with the Volunteer Office and/or Public Support Director to select appropriate presentations for and/or participation in various community events and programs
- Recruiting new volunteers and helping them fill out applications
- Designing posters and materials for various CDE and Red Cross events and programs and for a wide range or audiences.
Time Commitment Varies depending upon events scheduled in your community
Health and Safety Logistical Assistant
Description This person would make sure all of the logistical details are set for all or some of the First Aid\CPR classes during the week (or on Saturdays, if available)
ResponsibilitiesPrepare the classroom. Set up mannequins and classroom tables. Any other duties as required.
Time Commitment 1-4 hours per week or as repairs are needed.
Citizen CPR/First Aid Instructor
DescriptionInstructor to teach CRP/First Aid during the week or some Saturdays to the local population.
ResponsibilitiesTeach a CPR/First Aid class one or more times per month. Volunteer would be experienced in making presentations and able to use the materials and technical equipment.
Note: If the instructor has never had CPR/First Aid, we will provide their training, at no charge, and all materials for the class are also provided for free.
Time Commitment 2-4 hours per week
CDE Disaster Speaker for Youth
Description aperson to speak to middle and high school students about local disaster work
Responsibilities tell local students about CDE (Community Disaster Education) using a PowerPoint presentation and a Disaster Kit
