Mission Statement:
CAMP's mission is to strengthen and inspire individuals with special needs - and those who care for them - through Recreation, Respite and Education.
Program History:
CAMP was founded in 1979 to fill gaps in recreational services provided for individuals with special needs. From a single week for 60 children with a variety of special needs in 1979, CAMP has expanded its camping and respite programs to serving more than 1,000 individuals with special needs and their families each year.
In 2009, 811 children and adults (aged 5 to 45 years) with a variety of physical, mental, behavioral, and medical disabilities attended our residential summer camping program at Camp CAMP in Center Point, TX. From January through May and September through December, CAMP operates the Respite Club, a group of three different programs that serve a diverse clientele. The first program is Parents Night Out (PNO), offered one Friday evening per month for children with special needs aged 6 months to 13 years and their non-disabled siblings. The second is TADA or Teen and Adult Day adventure, held one Saturday each month which allows individuals aged 14 to 35 the opportunity for socialization and independence as they attend a fun, recreational activity in the community. The third is respite weekends held once per month at Camp CAMP in Center Point. Throughout 2009, PNO has served approximately 30 children with special needs and their siblings each month. An average of 15 individuals with special needs attend TADA each month, and another 35 campers attend each respite weekend.
Additionally, CAMP hosts a playgroup of between 10 and 20 children from the Wilford Hall Family Advocacy Program every Thursday morning at the Boorda Center.
