Philosophy/Belief Statement:
Polycystic Kidney Disease is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting more than 12.5 million people worldwide. PKD affects more people than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, sickle cell anemia, and Down syndrome combined.
For most patients, PKD ultimately causes the kidneys to shut down. Once that happens, dialysis and transplant are their only options to prolong life.
PKD equally affects men, women, and children regardless of age, race, geography, or ethnic origin. It does not skip a generation. Parents with the dominant form of PKD have a 50 percent change of passing the disease on to each of their children. Until a cure is found, PKD will threaten the lives of every generation of every family living with the disease.
Currently, PKD research is grossly under-funded compared to less prevalent diseases. And while there is no treatment for PKD and no cure, there is hope...
Program History:
The PKD Foundation is the only organization in the world that is devoted to promoting research to find a cure for PKD and improving the care and treatment of those it affects.
The PKD Foundation is a volunteer-driven organization. Each and every Walk for PKD event is coordinated and run by volunteers who donate their time and talent to make it possible. Because of this, more than 83 cents of every dollar goes directly toward patient education and research funding.
Events:
Join us for the Central Jersey Walk for PKD on Sunday, October 3rd at the beautiful Mercer County Park, West Picnic Area. Take part in a 1.5 or 3 mile walk around the park and feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with friends & family afterwards. Just before the walk, we’ll have our Penny Kid’s Dash with Scorch from the Trenton Devils, who will be there to help kick off the festivities. By raising funds for PKD and Participating in the Walk, you’ll be entered to win a variety of prizes, including tickets to the McCarter Theatre and more. Don’t miss this event!
