There are well documented studies that show the links between HIV status, low socio-economic status, homelessness, addiction and other chronic diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease and Hepatitis. This powerful combination of factors, specific to each client, is what Strongest Link works to address. While each situation is different, the basic needs remain the same. With stable housing, a big challenge for many of our clients, they are able to better manage their disease, practice good nutrition and as a result stay healthier. With access to nutritious food, clients experience less symptoms and side effects and are able to be more productive and engaged. Strongest Link's Wellness Center, Cornerstone, offers a safe place to connect with peers and share support as well as access free wellness activities, stress is reduced and a stronger foundation for health is maintained. With supportive, coordinated and trusted providers for health care and other treatment needs such as mental health or substance abuse services, our clients are able to engage in consistent, coordinated care and have better health outcomes. There is no such thing as the typical client; we serve those who are both newly diagnosed and those who have lived with the disease for many years, both men and women, of many different and diverse backgrounds. At Cornerstone on any given day, sitting around the kitchen table, Cornerstone hosts the pageantry of humanity. The common ground is the experience of living with HIV/AIDS, and Cornerstone provides the one space where clients can come together in a community of peer support. At Cornerstone, we go beyond disease management to support improved quality of life for underserved individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Essex County, MA.
