Mission Statement:
KID is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting children by fighting for product safety. Our mission is to save lives by enhancing transparency and accountability through safer product development, better education and stronger advocacy for children.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
KID believes that there is an urgent need to create a safer environment for our children. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among children under age five. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 112 children die each year and another 343,000 are rushed to emergency rooms in incidents associated with children’s products. Despite these alarming statistics, news of products recalled for dangerous defects rarely reaches the affected population in an effective manner. KID research has revealed that only 10% of recalled products ever get returned or corrected, resulting in a plethora of dangerous products in our homes, care facilities, and on store shelves.
Additional Information:
To fulfill its mission, KID:
- Reaches out to parents, caregivers, service providers and others through safety workshops, media coverage, speaking engagements, social media and web presence and printed educational materials;
- Serves as a watchdog on regulatory agencies and manufacturers to assure safe children's products and advocates for stronger protections for our most vulnerable consumers;
- Encourages designers and student engineers to build safety into each product and promotes the development of the safest products possible for our children.
