Mission Statement:
To provide free tax preparation for low income families. NVACASH-VITA volunteers prepared over 5,900 tax returns in the 2014 filing season. Clients received over $8.3 million in refunds and credits and saved over $1.1 million in professional filing fees.
Program History:
VITA is a federal program and has been around since mid 70s. Fairfax County has been helping to run this program since 2005. Under the management of James Do the program has grown from 729 returns in 2005 to 5,900 in 2015, bringing back to the community millions of dollars in tax refunds and providing financial education to clients.
Additional Information:
Northern Virginia families with low-income need your help in preparing their tax returns and assisting the program as greeter, screener, translator and/or IT support. Join the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program 2016 now! VITA provides free tax preparation for eligible taxpayers who made less than $54,000 in 2015. Multiple locations are available throughout Northern Virginia for volunteers. Details and enrollment schedule will be posted in fall 2015. Stay tuned! Duties: Provide basic tax return preparation and program assistance for eligible taxpayers. Provide high quality assistance to all taxpayers. Deal with the public in a helpful and supportive manner, including interview skills which will be provided as needed. Must be friendly, dependable and flexible. Maintain confidentiality of customer information and uphold the highest ethical standard. Volunteer Benefits: We provide free IRS tax law and software training. Advanced Tax Return Preparers who meet the requirements can also receive CE credits from IRS. Qualifications: We provide training!
